How to solve Black screen On Toshiba Notebook PC

I powered on my toshiba satellite laptop and the power light comes on, the hard drive light flashes,CDrom initialized but the screen never changes from black. I have tried connecting a working external monitor and nothing shows on the external monitor. I have tried powering the laptop on battery, and connected to AC with & without battery, but display still does not change from black screen.
